Geotechnical Monitoring and Safety Assessment in Mining Operation
Get the knowledge and practical skills required for geotechnical monitoring and safety assessment in mining and civil operations using advanced technologies such as ground-based radar, InSAR, and QGIS.

Luis Tejada Arata

Description
Geotechnical monitoring is a critical aspect of mining operations, ensuring the safety and stability of mine structures by measuring and analyzing ground movements, stress, and other geotechnical parameters. This Build Project introduces students to fundamental geotechnical monitoring techniques and tools, empowering them to understand and manage potential geological hazards within a mine environment. Through hands-on experience and data analysis, you will gain a foundational understanding of how geotechnical monitoring plays a key role in enhancing mine safety.
Application timeline
What you will learn
- By the end of the project, you will be able to:- Understand geotechnical terms and concepts, like opportunities and risks.
- - Identify and analyze simple patterns in geotechnical data, such as detecting early warning signs of potential ground movement.
- - Apply data mapping and visualization skills through basic QGIS exercises, demonstrating how spatial data can be used in monitoring and hazard assessment.
- - Prepare a structured technical report, presenting a data collection and analysis findings.
Project workshops
Prerequisites
- Knowledge of basic geotechnical engineering principles, including the engineering design process, risk assessment and safety, and rock mechanics.
- Willingness to learn GIS tools to interpret results and draw conclusions.
- Ability to understand ground movement trends from geotechnical monitoring instruments such as piezometers, ground-based radars, and GNSS.

About the Fellow

Luis Tejada Arata

Luis is a Geological Engineering Build Fellow at Dream Ventures Labs, where she works with students leading projects in soil and rock mechanics. Luis is a geotechnical engineer at ASARCO, where she focuses on ensuring safe excavation and slope design, monitors ground conditions, implements slope reinforcement measures, and assesses risks related to geotechnical hazards like landslides or subsidence. Luis has over three years of experience in the mining field. Luis leads projects related to the pit and tailings facility. She holds a mining degree from the New Mexico Institute in Mining and Technology. A fun fact about Luis is that he likes playing tennis and also played saxophone during high school and university.
