Description

You will learn legal writing to organize research, create outlines, and draft legal documents such as memorandums and briefs at the end of the project. In this Build Project, you will understand the basics of legal writing and its importance in the legal field. You will write down a legal paper: a memorandum or brief. This assignment will require you to complete research plans, writing outlines, document summaries, and writing assignments. You will also develop advanced writing, research, and analysis skills and a deep understanding of legal concepts. These skills can be integrated into their professional and academic pursuits, gaining valuable expertise in the process. You will also get acquainted with multiple legal search engines and be able to conduct successful research assignments.

What you will learn

  • Incorporate legal skills to enhance your writing skills, transition your analysis outline into a writing outline, and transition your writing outline into a legal memorandum or brief. 
  • Understand legal search engines: Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg; draft a research plan and utilize legal search tips; integrate legal research into your own to strengthen your research abilities.
  • Understand legal cases and statutes and be able to provide a summary; Interpret your findings and create clear and concise summaries of the findings. 
  • Integrate legal analysis into your own to strengthen your analysis abilities. 
Build Projects are 8-week experiences that operate on a rolling basis. Selected participants engage in weekly live workshops with a Build Fellow and 2-15 other students.

Prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge of the legal system such as the overarching structure and operation of the courts, the roles of advocates, and binding law.
  • Understanding of legal writing’s objectives as effective legal writing aims to clearly and persuasively communicate complex information, analyze and apply relevant laws and precedents, and ultimately make a compelling case.  
  • Basic analysis skills as lawyers must examine facts, identify salient legal issues, and draw well-reasoned conclusions.  
  • Some exposure to detailed research assignments, such as papers that incorporate more than five references.
  • Some exposure to complex writing assignments, such as papers that include more than three headings.
