Get the knowledge and practical skills required for geotechnical monitoring and safety assessment in mining and civil operations using advanced technologies such as ground-based radar, InSAR, and QGIS.
Geotechnical monitoring is a critical aspect of mining operations, ensuring the safety and stability of mine structures by measuring and analyzing ground movements, stress, and other geotechnical parameters. This Build Project introduces students to fundamental geotechnical monitoring techniques and tools, empowering them to understand and manage potential geological hazards within a mine environment. Through hands-on experience and data analysis, you will gain a foundational understanding of how geotechnical monitoring plays a key role in enhancing mine safety.
Introduction to geotechnical monitoring in mining, and discuss the final project deliverable
Introduction to tools like ground based radars, INSAR, piezometers, and seismographs, with a focus on their applications.
Introduction of the technology and history of it and current applications
This session covers the basics of InSAR, a remote sensing technique that uses radar satellite data to detect ground deformation. Students will learn how InSAR is applied in mining to monitor ground stability, subsidence, and landslide risks. The session includes an overview of how to interpret InSAR images and understand basic geotechnical implications.
Basic QGIS skills, focusing on geotechnical data representation and mapping
Analysis of data trends, such as ground deformation and water level changes
Instruction on structuring a report about data trends and presenting data clearly.
Final presentation session where students summarize project insights and receive feedback.

Luis is a Geological Engineering Build Fellow at Dream Ventures Labs, where he works with students leading projects in soil and rock mechanics.
Luis is a geotechnical engineer at ASARCO, where he focuses on ensuring safe excavation and slope design, monitors ground conditions, implements slope reinforcement measures, and assesses risks related to geotechnical hazards like landslides or subsidence.
Luis has over three years of experience in the mining field. Luis leads projects related to the pit and tailings facility.
He holds a mining degree from the New Mexico Institute in Mining and Technology.
A fun fact about Luis is that he likes playing tennis and also played saxophone during high school and university.
