Description

Electric Vehicle design has become incredibly widespread in the industry of mechanical engineering, due to new developments that make this technology more attractive than ever. In this Build Project, you'll wear the hat of an Electric Vehicle Mechanical Engineer and design an Electric Vehicle battery enclosure. Our goal is to make sure the function of the frame is fulfilled in a lightweight way, while still having structural integrity to ensure safety. Under the supervision of an experienced Build Fellow, you'll learn how to use common formulas to evaluate the performance of the designed battery enclosure. You'll become familiar with useful and widespread tools like Google Sheets, FEA and CAD software. All this will happen in an environment that simulates the operations of a real engineering design team.

What you will learn

  • Use well-known free CAD software to design structural designs from scratch
  • Use spreadsheet tools to perform basic mathematical analyses of mechanical design
  • Use free FEA software to analyze a design's structural performance under load
  • Use design tools to set up presentation decks to summarize performed work
Build Projects are 8-week experiences that operate on a rolling basis. Selected participants engage in weekly live workshops with a Build Fellow and 2-15 other students.

Prerequisites

  • Basic level of geometrical thinking: you should be able to understand 3D space and how different bodies (like structural members) can be combined to form a holistic structure.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics: you should be able to do perform calculus digitally in spreadsheets and understand parametrical variables in formulas and how they relate to the final result.
  • Other prerequisites: before the project starts, you'll need to have Fusion 360 (free) installed on your computer and created a Google account to access Google Sheets and Google Slides.
