Analyze the technology advancements in the spatial genomics field and explore their potential industry applications.
Spatial transcriptomics, acknowledged as Method of the Year by Nature Methods in 2020, is poised to bring transformative changes across diverse domains such as biological research, pathology, diagnostics, drug discovery, and therapeutics. In this Build Project, you will wear the hat of a Research Associate and perform a comprehensive case study to demonstrate the potential applications of spatial genomics in understanding health and disease. Under the supervision of an experienced Molecular Biology Scientist, you will conduct literature research to identify the potential applicable areas of spatial genomics. You will gain an in-depth understanding of molecular biology tools, such as FISH, next-generation sequencing, and spatial omics technologies, and how they can be utilized in a real R&D team in the biotech industry.
Compile information to create a comprehensive slide deck to demonstrate how spatial genomics technology can be utilized for specific industry needs.

Yi Sun is a Molecular Biology Build Fellow at Open Avenues, where she works with students leading projects in Molecular Biology.
Yi is an Associate Scientist at Vizgen, where she works on developing and improving spatial genomics technology and bringing it to wider applications. Yi spent 2 years utilizing Next-Generation Sequencing technology for clinical research and diagnosis before moving to the biotech industry in 2022. Prior to that, she had 10+ years of research experience using and optimizing molecular biology techniques for gene regulation studies. Yi holds a BS in Biological Sciences and an MS in Biology.
A fun fact about Yi: She plays basketball but is not good at it and her favorite animal is dinosaurs.
