Identify, design, and develop a solution to a problem of an industry of your choice by expanding the horizons of mechanical design and merging science with creativity.
A mechanical designer walks between the realms of science and creativity. In this Build Project, you - the ambitious innovators, will understand how to develop an idea by following engineering design principles. You will learn to identify a problem strategically, use brainstorming tools to create multiple ideas, and use your engineering knowledge to develop these ideas for production.
During your project, you will apply practical mechanical engineering tools used in the industry to maximize the reliability of your solutions. Skills learned during this project will help you understand the fast iteration of idea development and follow-through required to excel in a modern engineering environment.
You will discuss your goals and industry of interest. Based on the industry and problems, you will select one concept to develop throughout the Build Project. You will also review the core concepts of mechanical engineering.
You will learn the principles of creativity in mechanical design and how to develop said ideas. Using the project they selected, you will understand the literature review process and data collection. The session will be supplemented by interactive session and best CAD (Solidworks) practices.
You will start finalizing your solutions and creating CAD models for the part. You will then develop the models and assembly.
You will continue developing the idea through CAD. Also, you will understand the importance of material selection in product development and use life cycle analysis to understand sustainable product development.
Understand the importance of manufacturing processes and update the design accordingly. You will also run through the FMEA to better understand the impact of your solution.
You will understand how to use DFM and DFA principles in designs to create the most effective real-world solution that fits industry needs. You will also understand how to create engineering drawings.
Start creating a final report to be submitted to the Build Fellow for review. You will include the scaling and economics of your solution to create an impactful simulation of the real-world scenario.
You will present your final report and presentation. We will discuss industry trends and some tips & tricks for the job search.
