Introduction

Hello everyone, I'm Varun Devella, I am originally from India, and I'm thrilled to share a bit about my journey with you. Coming to the US in 2019 was a big step for me. Fueled by a passion for a career in finance and a curiosity about how businesses are run, especially in manufacturing, I pursued a degree in Finance and Analytics, where I discovered just how powerful numbers can be in making processes smoother and more efficient.

What fascinates me the most is how financial analysis can do more than just crunch numbers—it can drive improvements in how products are made. During my studies and in my professional experience, I've seen firsthand how even insignificant changes in operations can lead to significant gains in productivity and cost savings. It's like solving a puzzle where every piece fits together to create a more efficient whole.

As an Operations & Financial Analyst, I've worked in manufacturing environments where I've had the chance to dig into the details, figure out what's holding things back, and implement changes that make a real difference. My goal is to help you see how finance and operations are not just about keeping the books straight or managing the assembly line, they're about creating value by making everything run just a little bit better.<

I'm excited to explore these ideas with you and to show how the skills you're developing can lead to meaningful improvements in the real world. Whether you're just starting out or looking to deepen your understanding, I hope to make this journey as engaging and insightful as possible. Let's dive into the fascinating world where finance meets operations, and discover together how we can make things better, one step at a time.

 skills

What are the main hard skills you use on a daily basis in your current job?

1
Data Analysis

Analyzing complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies that impact manufacturing operations. I developed this skill during my Finance and Analytics degree, where I learned to use tools like Excel, SQL, and Python for data analysis. In my current role, I apply these skills daily to assess production efficiency, track key performance indicators (KPIs), and provide actionable insights to optimize processes.

2
Financial Modeling

Building and maintaining financial models to forecast future performance, assess risks, and support decision-making in manufacturing and supply chain contexts. I honed this skill through coursework in financial management and real-world application in my role as a Financial Analyst. I use these models to analyze cost structures, evaluate investment opportunities, and provide financial recommendations to management.

3
Process Optimization

Identifying inefficiencies in manufacturing processes and implementing solutions to improve productivity and reduce costs. I gained experience in process optimization through my work in various manufacturing environments, where I employed methodologies like Lean and Six Sigma to streamline operations.    Lean and Six Sigma are methodologies used in manufacturing and other industries to improve efficiency and quality. Lean focuses on eliminating waste and optimizing processes, while Six Sigma aims to reduce defects and variability in production by using data-driven techniques. Together, they help companies streamline operations and deliver higher quality products with greater efficiency. This skill is critical in my daily responsibilities, where I continuously seek ways to enhance operational efficiency and drive cost savings.

4
Supply Chain Management

Managing and optimizing supply chain operations to ensure smooth and cost-effective production flows. I developed this skill through hands-on experience in supply chain analysis, where I learned to balance inventory levels, forecast demand, and coordinate with suppliers. In my current role, I use these skills to maintain a reliable supply chain, minimize disruptions, and support overall manufacturing efficiency.

:

My journey began in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, where I was initially drawn to the technical challenges and problem-solving aspects of the field. However, by my third year, I started to realize that having business acumen was just as important as mastering technical skills. I saw how data could drive decision-making and how critical it was to understand the broader business context in which engineering solutions were applied. This realization sparked a shift in my focus, and I became increasingly interested in the intersection of technology, finance, and operations.

Recognizing the growing importance of data analysis in making informed business decisions, I decided to pivot my career towards financial and operations analysis. This was a significant transition, but one that felt natural given my evolving interests. I immersed myself in studying finance and analytics, gaining the skills needed to analyze complex data sets, optimize processes, and contribute to strategic business decisions. This shift allowed me to leverage my technical background while expanding my understanding of how businesses operate at a higher level.

Starting my career as a Financial and Operations Analyst, I found that my engineering background provided a unique perspective. I was able to approach problems with a systems-oriented mindset, which was invaluable in analyzing financial data and optimizing operational processes in manufacturing settings. This blend of technical knowledge and business acumen has been key to my success in the field, enabling me to contribute effectively to both the financial and operational aspects of the business.

Looking back, the decision to transition from engineering to financial and operations analysis was one of the most pivotal moments in my career. It opened new opportunities and allowed me to develop a skill set that is increasingly relevant in today’s data-driven business environment.

What would you tell your younger you regarding building your current career?

Dive into learning about several aspects of the business to build a well-rounded perspective.

The job search can be tough and filled with rejections, but it’s important to stay patient and trust the process. Setbacks are part of the journey, so keep learning and stay persistent. Embrace change and be adaptable, as the business world evolves quickly. During my job search, I sent out countless coffee chat emails and reached out to alumni, trying to build connections and learn from their experiences. It wasn't easy facing rejections, but each conversation gave me new insights and motivation. If I were going through it again, I'd remind myself to keep pushing forward, stay curious, and remember that every "no" brings me closer to the right "yes.".

Stay open to new tools and trends, whether it’s in data analysis or supply chain management. Networking is also key building connections in your field can open doors and offer valuable insights.
