Introduction

Hello! I’m Shruti Adoni, a data engineer by profession and a data enthusiast at heart. My journey in tech started in high school back in India, where I chose computer science as an elective. This early choice laid a strong foundation, making it easier to grasp complex concepts later in college.

Driven by a deep interest in programming, I pursued a degree in computer science engineering. Over those four years, I gained a range of programming skills, from software development to mastering object-oriented principles, which continue to guide my work today.

Naturally, When I first graduated with a degree in computer science engineering, I imagined my career would be straightforward—land a tech job as a software developer, grow in it, and keep climbing. But as it turns out, the journey has been anything but predictable.

Fresh out of undergrad college, I joined a leading manufacturing firm – GE Appliances, as a systems analyst. After working as an analyst for over 3 years, I found myself drawn to the world of data and analytics. The idea of using data to drive business decisions was compelling, and I decided to pursue a degree in business analytics. This choice was both exciting and daunting. Transitioning from functional analysis to the analytics space felt like another leap, but it was a leap that gave me a whole new set of skills. Business analytics taught me how to interpret data to understand patterns and trends, skills that added another layer to my expertise. I moved to Chicago to study for a master’s degree in business analytics at University of Illinois Chicago which brought both incredible highs and unexpected challenges, especially with the impact of COVID-19.

Currently, I work as a data engineer at Citadel Securities. Here, I try to blend my technical background, analytical mindset, and hands-on experience with data. It’s a role that demands constant learning, and it’s rewarding to apply everything I've learned along the way. I find myself in a unique position, combining my engineering foundations, analysis skills, and insights from functional analysis to create solutions that make a difference.

Today, as a data engineer, I look back and realize how each phase has shaped me, from functional analysis to business analytics, finally leading me here. I’m excited for anyone who might be in the early stages, feeling interested in data analytics or even overwhelmed. Trust me, I've been there and would love to help you dive deeper into this field.

What are the main hard skills you use on a daily basis in your current job?

1
Programming Languages

Writing code to accomplish a task, debugging and writing test cases. In my bachelors, I learnt languages like C, C++ and Java which laid good foundation of strongly typed language. I got a chance to learn Python during my master’s and I use it extensively in my current role. I also write code in JavaScript and Apex which is a proprietary language of Salesforce.

2
Database management

Building data models and designing solutions for end-to-end system integrations have been key parts of my experience. I've gained substantial expertise in database management and data modeling in my current role. Proficiency in SQL and other query languages is another invaluable skill, as these are universally used across companies and are essential for working with various data repositories.

3
Git

Git is an essential tool for version control and collaboration within a team. I first learned it in college to showcase my projects to potential employers. Since entering the workforce, I’ve gained extensive hands-on experience with Git, making it a fundamental part of my daily workflow.

What are the main soft skills you use on a daily basis in your current job?

1
Influencing without authority

In all my roles, I have collaborated with a variety of stakeholders, honing my ability to communicate and influence effectively. In IT—particularly within support teams—understanding what drives each stakeholder and learning how to align with their priorities has proven to be an invaluable skill.

2
Problem Solving

In tech, the ability to break down complex issues and find actionable, efficient solutions is invaluable. Whether troubleshooting technical issues or optimizing processes, I’ve learned that a structured, solution-oriented approach is key to navigating challenges and driving results.

3

My journey into the workforce began with GE Appliances, where I joined as a Graduate Engineer Trainee through campus placement. Although I started as a Systems Analyst and enjoyed the problem-solving aspects, I soon discovered a deeper interest in analytics and data. This realization led me to make a significant career shift and pursue a master’s degree in business analytics after 4 years as a working professional.

I moved to Chicago just before the pandemic started. The pandemic made the experience both exciting and challenging. I completed my degree in three semesters and managed to do a CPT internship as a data analyst, which proved invaluable. While searching for internships, I also began my job search a year before graduation, and I found early career fairs to be a game-changer. Engaging directly with professionals gave me insights into what hiring managers value, feedback on my resume, and a better understanding of essential skills in demand.

The search itself, however, was tough. With COVID-19 impacting the job market, I faced numerous challenges, submitting hundreds of applications with little response or automated rejections. Eventually, I accepted an internship at a roofing company, which turned out to be pivotal. The hands-on experience there not only enhanced my skills but also positioned me strongly for my current role.

It was my LinkedIn profile that caught the attention of a hiring manager from Citadel Securities. My internship experience stood out, and I interviewed and was offered a data engineering position—a role that has been filled with continuous learning and growth ever since.

I recommend the use of every opportunity, from internships to career fairs, to build relevant skills and connections. Each experience can bring you closer to a role that aligns with your passions and strengths.

What would you tell your younger you regarding building your current career?

Looking back, I realize that career paths are rarely linear, and that’s okay. Each role taught me something new, from technical skills to soft skills, and each brought me closer to where I am today. I’d also encourage myself to seek hands-on experience, whether through internships, side projects, or volunteering, as each of these experiences is a step toward building real-world skills and expanding your professional network.

Final thoughts & tips

I’d say embrace learning continuously, as the professional world is always changing, and every experience offers an opportunity to grow. Networking is also crucial—attend career fairs, reach out to professionals, and build connections, as each one could open a new door. Hands-on experience through internships, projects, and volunteering can give you practical skills and a clearer sense of what you enjoy.

Technology is an ever-evolving field, and sometimes the best thing you can do is to embrace the journey—even if it doesn’t look exactly like you had planned.
